Nearer, My God to Thee

After searching for some intermediate hymn arrangements for piano, I wrote this with one of my young piano students in mind.  My hope was that it would be simple enough for an early intermediate pianist, but beautiful and interesting enough for a young pianist to want to play it, as well as reverent enough for sacrament meeting.

I later reworked this arrangement as a simple choral piece for a quick-to-learn-and-share song for my ward choir.

Voicing: Intermediate Piano Solo and simple SATB
Topics: Funeral, guidance, hope, spirituality, trials

Lyric: Sarah F. Adams, 1805-1848
Music: Lowell Mason, 1792-1872
Arranged: Rachel P. Mohlman

LYRICS
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me.
Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

There let the way appear,
Steps unto heav’n;
All that thou sendest me,
In mercy giv’n;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!
