The First Noel

Marianne and I direct a women's choir every Christmas season. When we needed an extra piece for this year's choir, we decided to write one. It is always fun to sing of Christmas and of angels singing at Christ's birth, but my favorite part of this arrangement is the third verse where the text highlights the real reason Christmas is so special -- because of the atonement of Jesus Christ. That is why we celebrate his birth. That is why the angels sang in such glory -- they knew who he was and what he would do, and that with his love, and his blood, he would purchase our souls. Truly, we sing his praises.

"The First Noel" received Special Recognition in the 2010 LDS Church Music Submission.

Special thanks to the Kennewick Washington Stake 2012 Relief Society Christmas Choir for the recording here.

The First Noel, the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay,
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heav'nly Lord
The pains of sin and death he fought
And with his blood mankind hath bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel!
Born is the King!
Praises we sing!
Born is the King of Israel!
